Day Two!! Food!

In case you were worried that I would starve to death here - I will start this post with pictures of food! After a busy and interesting morning I was starving so found a great place for lunch. I say great because it was pretty busy, the menu was only in Spanish, and no one working there or eating there spoke English! After looking at the menu for about 10 minutes and having them send no less then 3 people over to try and communicate with me I just went with what waiter number 3 pointed to and said "good!" And he was correct - although I thought my first course was going to be a salad because it was in the section marked salade and they brought me a bottle of red wine vinegar and a bottle of olive oil. Wrong! It was some kind of soup in a tureen that was creamy and had some kind of seafood in it that at one time had a shell. I think it was escargot which I don't normally eat but I did and it was very good. Course number 2 was a spinach risotto with blue cheese and Parmesan cheese - and it was great!  The restaurant was called Farga and located in the area they refer to as L'Eixample. It's considered to be the "new" city which is interesting because it's like 200 years old!

They brought great bread and a plate of olives too. Bread yes! Olives no for me but I did enjoy the wine!

Then later in the afternoon I treated myself to this little gem!

The chocolate triangle! Yumm!

So what else did I do today? Started out seeing the Casa Batillo. This is considered to be Gaudi's perhaps craziest work. Locally it is referred to as the house of dragons" because the roof has scales and kind of a dragon on it. The term gaudy just had to come from Gaudi! I'm not a big fan of strange architecture but this house was actually beautiful although kind of reminded me of the Mickey Mouse house in Orlando but prettier!!  I went on a tour so learned lots of interesting stuff like it was originally built for a rich man and his family. They lived on the first two floors and rented out the upper levels. Before the building opened for the public people rented apartments in it and there is still a tenant in one of the units that signed a life lease and she's 82 now. She must not mind 100's of people traipsing through the building every day!

Here are some pictures from the inside.

From there I went over to see the biggest attraction in Barcelona - La Sagrada Familia. It's the church designed by Gaudi that they have been building for 134 years - and it's not done!! They hope to complete it in 10 years but that's just tentative. It is being funded mainly by the entry fees so put it on your list and let's get this thing done!!

La Sagrada Familia means The Holy Family and there are carvings all over to depict the life of Jesus.

It is really a breathtaking site both outside but especially inside. My pictures won't do it justice - it's worth a trip to just see it!

After seeing La Sagrada Familia I stayed in that area and had lunch and wandered around. I say wandered because I finally accept that I have directional dyslexia. I can pinpoint on a map exactly where I am - and then 100% of the time I go in exactly the wrong direction to try and get somewhere!! There were a couple of stores I was trying to find and about 2 hours later after taking literally 50 wrong turns found them - thank God I'm traveling alone!!  But the buildings are so beautiful here that I really didn't mind. The city is so pedestrian friendly - wide walking boulevards and tons of places to sit (and in my case look AGAIN at my map!) I also went to the biggest department store called El Corte Ingles and took the escalator up all 9 floors just to check what they had. Oh and 2 more levels below ground which housed a full grocery store and pharmacy! The kids department had Versace and Burberry for kids - thank goodness I have no grandchildren yet or it might have been more tempting.

Next stop for me was another museum - MACBA - Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona. It was a very cool new building which I enjoyed probably even more so then the art. It was a little too contemporary for me - lots of video art and newspapers stacked on the ground with rocks. I can appreciate it more when I read what the artist was trying to convey but it also kind of wears me out so I breezed through pretty fast.

My last stop of the day was the Mercat De La Boqueria which is a huge food market. There were amazing displays of produce, cheeses, meats, fish, chocolates, nuts and more. Everything looked super fresh and it was packed with people buying things to eat immediately or to take home and cook. There were a handful of bars that cooked the food right in front of you and I saw people eating lots of freshly cooked seafood.

I wasn't hungry but might stop in tomorrow for some of the amazing freshly cut fruit!!

So that was Day 2!!! The weather was beautiful again - just a bit cooler then yesterday which I much preferred. They said they usually get quite a bit of rain in April but so far I have been lucky. I have more on my list for tomorrow - so planning to start early and cover more ground. Mileage tracked today at 13 miles!!! Hopefully that burned off my chocolate triangle!!!

Thanks for coming along!!! Make it a great day!

Barcelona - Made it!!!

Hello from Barcelona!! The flight was uneventful and close to being on time - I flew United and I'm going to have to stop bad rapping them. Both planes were new and it couldn't have gone smoother. I arrived this morning after not sleeping all night so hopefully this post will be semi coherent. If not sorry but I'm functioning on fumes! I made it to the hotel and couldn't check into my room yet so just left my suitcase and headed out to explore. It has been an absolutely perfect weather day and Barcelona is spectacularly beautiful. My driver from the airport shared with me that there are very few parks or green spaces - but lots and lots of trees so it appears quite green. He also said that almost everyone lives in apartments - there are really no single family homes in the entire city - but some in the outlying area. I also noticed that there are lots of places to sit throughout the city - benches under the trees so it has a park-like feel.

My hotel is in a great location - just about 2 blocks from La Rambla - which is the main tourist street - but easy to walk to the places I wanted to see. So the first thing I did was ramble on La Rambla! I have been told numerous times before I arrived and even since I got here today that the most pick pocketing occurs in Barcelona so beware!!! And La Rambla is the key spot!! They even have signs posted frequently that warn you so I was glad to have my tried and tested money belt with me. I don't know why I bothered packing - I should have just brought a carry on and bought everything here!! So many great stores!! So after a bit of walking I headed to my first stop -  La Catedral. The building was started in 1298 and worked on till 1460. They take their time around here! The facade was added in 1870 and is considered to be European Gothic. Quite impressive!

My iPhone Pictures don't do it justice - lots of beautiful stained glass!

This picture is dark - sorry!! It was very sunny but the sun was on the wrong side for a good picture of the front.  Notice the big crowd of people in front of the church. There was actually an old-school orchestra playing traditional Spanish music and lots of people dancing! It was so cool! I had a picture but I can't get it to pull over from my photos. They were older people - ha! Kind of like me! And they were in a couple of big circles doing some kind of traditional dance in unison. It was awesome!!! One of my favorite parts of the day!

You can see the orchestra - all wearing blue shirts and ties!

Around behind the church are the cloisters where 13 ducks live - it's always 13 because of some 13 year old girl they crucified!!!! The ducks honk to warn of approaching people so they are like guard dogs. And the other picture is what they get to look up at - so pretty!!!

Someone threw treats to the ducks and they made a huge commotion!!

My next stop was the Parc de la Ciutadella. As I said there are very few actual parks in Barcelona and this is one they have! Their version of Central Park. It was beautiful! Today it was a combo Farmer's Market/Craft Show/Human Circus!! I saw amazing produce, organic breads, cheeses, herbs, handmade beautiful purses, clothing, candles, fencing, children's yoga, 200 people doing tai chi, bands, dancing and a human gyroscope!!! For free!!! The park has a zoo, their parliament and this amazing waterfall designed by Josep Fontsere with the help of a young Gaudi.

Two shots of the waterfall, me doing the best selfie I can from the top and a beautiful fountain in the park. And check out the gorgeous building behind the fountain - an elaborate greenhouse.

I did poorly on food today so no pictures of what I ate. I was distracted by all the beautiful buildings so ended up at a cafe getting a cheese sandwich on facaccia bread. Lame!!! With all the amazing food in Barcelona I promise to do better tomorrow. I did stop in the afternoon for gelato - dulce de leche - but ate it too fast to photograph. There are so many gelato shops here I feel like I am in Italy!! But I have been eyeing the pastry shops and pretty sure that's in my near future!! Also must have some paella!!! Not leaving without it!

I also went to the Picasso Museum but the line was long (today is a free day) and I just didn't have the strength. I will get back there probably Tuesday and be happy to pay to get in. It looks incredible!!

So today I accomplished the 3 things I set out to do:

 * See a couple of sites on my list

* Find my way back to the hotel

* Not get pick pocketed!!!!

Can't wait for tomorrow - but first hopefully a good nights sleep!! Thanks for coming along with me!!!

Last Blog Post!! (Before the Trip!)

This is most likely my LAST post from KC. My NEXT post will be from Barcelona!!! WOOHOO!!! Leaving next Saturday and lots to do - not the least of which is work - between now and then. But it will be all worth it - I am very excited and it's just days away! From Barcelona I take the train to Madrid, then fly to Lisbon, then fly to Paris and then back to KC. I will be gone 2 weeks and will try and post at least a bit every day - what I did and what I ate. Thanks for coming along with me!!!

Good Bye KC!! Hello Barcelona!!

Good Bye KC!! Hello Barcelona!!

This past week in KC has been filled with some fun things as well. The weather has been for the most part pretty nice - although very windy. Monday was beautiful so when I got home from work decided to take a walk down through the Power & Light, River Market and the Crossroads. While on my walk I had the pleasure of seeing all 3 of the recently arrived street cars being tested. There will be 4 in total and the 4th arrived late this past week. Here is what they look like:

I wish they each had a name. I am suggesting Royals players - Salvy, Moose, Hoz and Gordo!!!

I wish they each had a name. I am suggesting Royals players - Salvy, Moose, Hoz and Gordo!!!

And for at least the first year they will be FREE!!! I am very excited! First day to ride is Friday May 6th - and that's also First Friday so lots going on here in KC that whole weekend!

Wednesday evening Julie and I had our Broadway Theater tickets to see "Kinky Boots" at the Music Hall. It won the Tony for Best Musical the year it came out, and I have wanted to see it but couldn't get tickets when I tried in NYC. We met at one of my very favorite places in my neighborhood for drinks and appetizers before the show - Tannin Wine Bar & Kitchen. Love, love , love this place! One of the top 100 best wine lists in the country so lots of choices even by the glass!  It's at 15th and Walnut and does have some parking right on the south side. Excellent Happy Hour every day from 4-6 PM.

The show was fantastic! I highly recommend it and everyone there seemed to enjoy it equally as much. This was obviously the touring company as it's only here for 5 days, but the cast was so wonderful and talented I can't imagine that the Broadway cast could have been better. And we have a great venue here in KC at the Music Hall.

Looks like we coordinated our purses!!

I LOVE pizza and was feeling the need so Jim and I went to a great pizza place last night. Very cool atmosphere in the River Market and the new streetcar tracks in front are all ready to go. It's called IL Lazzarone and it's on Delaware right next to the Quay Coffeeshop. Thin crust pizza, great salads, and a full bar. They have this awesome pizza oven that was imported from Italy and cooks the pizza in less then 90 seconds because the oven has an average temperature of 1000 degrees!!! HOT!!

That silver dome behind the cooks is the oven!! Exposed brick walls which I really like. Worth checking out.

And lastly the Cheesecake Taste-Off!! Taking a temporary hiatus while I'm gone - but no worries - I will be blogging my dessert consumption as I travel. Drumroll please.............Red Velvet Cheesecake!!

Just beautiful isn't it???

Just beautiful isn't it???

I rate this cheesecake a 4. It was wonderful! Did not have a traditional cheesecake crust - instead a layer of delicious red velvet cake topped by a cheesecake layer, another red velvet cake layer, cheesecake layer and then an amazing frosting that was like a sweet whip cream. It's hard to see the frosting - but it's definitely there. Here is a picture of the back of the cake - it's just so pretty I took a separate picture.

White chocolate curls - pretty but a little too sweet for me. Too sweet for me - almost an oxymoron!!!!!

I saw this quote and wanted to share it -

Make it a great week!!!

It's Opening Day!!!

It couldn't be a more perfect weather day - perhaps just a tiny bit windy - but really spectacular. You might be saying - I didn't know Patti was such a baseball fan??? But since the Royals won the World Series this past season everyone here is now - me included!! So Go Royals!!! The rematch with the NY Mets tonight!! And still stinging from the KU basketball loss last Sunday to Villanova. College basketball is officially over tomorrow night after the Championship game so I need to make the switch. But I will be a little sad on Tuesday as I start counting the days till October 15th.

It's been a busy and fun week. So just a brief recap of some of the fun things I did in KC this week. Tuesday night was another Arts Alive event - and a good one! We started with drinks and appetizers at the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures located on the campus of the University of Missouri Kansas City. I blogged a bit about this place previously in the fall when I made a trip there fairly soon after their grand re-opening, but worth mentioning again as it is a real treasure and it's right here! It is housed in a 38 room Italianate building at 52nd and Oak. It originally opened in 1982, but as I mentioned just underwent a huge renovation and now has a collection with over 72,000 objects. The museum has the world's largest collection of fine-scale miniatures and one of the nation's largest antique toy collections on public display. A friend of mine just took her 3 children ages 7-12 there last week and she said they had a blast!

Cheryl and Gina in the top right corner!!

After having about an hour to browse the museum we headed to the MO Repertory Theater to see the latest production- The Fantastics."   Supposedly this show is the longest running musical in Off-Broadway history, so I'm surprised I've never seen it. It's done "in the round" so I was actually seated on what is typically the stage. I enjoyed it as I do most musicals - and the cast was very talented. The MO Rep is really a great place to see a show here in KC - consistently excellent and small enough where every seat is a good one.

As I mentioned previously I saw a great billboard a few weeks ago. It said "Do More of what Makes you Happy." I have written this each day on my planner as I like to keep my goals front and center. So on my way home from work on Friday I decided to stop off and see a movie. Why not end the work week laughing?? I went to see My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, and it definitely made me laugh. It was also heartwarming, sweet and a little corny. Then picked up a PotBelly sandwich for dinner - a great way to end the work week!!

Saturday morning I got up early and met my running friends for a nice 6 mile run. After, when we were having breakfast one of the ladies who is an artist shared a painting with us that she had made to remind a good friend of hers what a beautiful city Kansas CIty is, and wanted me to see it because it has my building in it!! And I want to share it with all of you as I think it is very special! Thank you Jewelee Lukowski!!!

Can you see me waving right under the Western Auto sign???

Can you see me waving right under the Western Auto sign???

Saturday afternoon Jim and I went to see the Da Vinci Exhibition at Union Station. It ends May 1st so better hurry if it's on your list. I know we've all seen the paintings of Leonardo da Vinci as he painted the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, and The Vitruvian Man. But I had no idea what a genius he really was!! The exhibit was mostly focuses on his other body of work - and it is incredibly extensive. He was born in 1452 and died in 1519 and in his 67 years he was no slacker.

image.jpg

Da Vinci had an extensive range and scope of knowledge in science, mathematics and nature. His studies, theories and inventions were in the subjects of light perspective, physics, anatomy, war and air. He is credited with inventing the helicopter, parachute and tank to name just a few. He had many notebooks with his notations, drawings and inventions, and many of these have been lost unfortunately. The remaining notebooks are housed in various museums around the world, the only one owned privately is by Bill Gates!

Union Station is such a beautiful and historic building - and still an active train station. There are a number of restaurants inside and we stopped at one of the best when we were done to enjoy a glass of wine.

And last but not least the Cheesecake of the week! Chocolate Tuxedo Cream!!! I rate this cheesecake a 4!!!

Perfection!!!

Perfection!!!

As I took my last bite I had only one thought - MORE!!! First of all - it doesn't really have the traditional crumb crust. The bottom layer is a delicious chocolate cake - kind of like a devil's food. The next layer is a rich chocolate cheesecake - heavier then the chocolate mousse. Next layer is a vanilla cream with tiny bits of chocolate goodness and all topped with a wonderful chocolate ganache frosting. Every bite was heaven and I highly recommend it for your eating enjoyment. I wish I was eating some right now!!

Countdown to my trip is 12 days!!! Lots to do between now and then - but I have my lists! Make it a great week!!

Happy Easter!

I woke up to snow this morning! Really crazy because our winter has been so mild - it was almost 80 degrees this past week! The grass is green and the tulips are blooming - but thankfully it didn't really stick and has already stopped. I hope you get your fill of chocolate eggs and peeps!

My heart breaks and I am filled with sadness for the people of Belgium. Too many times this has happened in recent years, and we are all touched with grief for the innocent people that died and made to fear fearful for our own safety and the safety of our family and friends. I felt compelled to mention this as some of my own family and friends have questioned my judgment in taking my trip in less then 3 weeks. My intent is not to bring anxiety to those that care about me, and I certainly appreciate the concern - but I feel very comfortable going forward with my plans. I will be as careful as I possibly can be, and if anything - feel that with the heightened security it is as good a time to go as any. It is a reminder to me of the importance of doing the things that you want to do when you can - none of us know how much time we have left so to wait could be a mistake. I saw a great billboard this past week with a message that I have taken to heart. "Do more of what makes you happy." I hope each of you do the same!

Now on to the Cheesecake Taste-Off!!! Am I getting sick of it yet??? Nope!! This week my choice - in honor of Easter was Carrot Cake Cheesecake. Carrots.......Bunny...... Well it made sense to me!!!

Is it Carrot Cake or Cheesecake?

Is it Carrot Cake or Cheesecake?

I will say first off - you should like carrot cake if you are going to order this one - and I love carrot cake!! You might be thinking to yourself - what I like best about carrot cake is the cream cheese icing - will I be disappointed? You will not be as this dessert has a huge amount of cream cheese icing! That big dollop on top? All icing! And the whole back too under that big pile of walnuts. So I rated this a 3 - really liked it a lot! Not a 4 because I wouldn't eat it every day but it was definitely delicious!!

Kansas City finally has a REAL bagel shop!!! Real as in boiled and then baked - not just bread dough with a hole in the middle. I have been anxiously awaiting the opening of Meshuggah Bagels. It's at 1208 W 39th St. in KC and decided to try it out yesterday. And it is the real deal! It has also brought the NY experience of standing in line for 30 minutes to get that real bagel! I thought at 10 AM on a Saturday it wouldn't be very busy but boy was I wrong. It's not a big place but the line for bagels was 30 people long. I decided since I was there to go ahead and give it a try - and no regrets! When I'm in NY getting a good bagel is one of my favorite ways to start the day - and now I can do it in KC too. They have 6 kinds - plain, salt, sesame, poppy seed, onion and everything. You can get it with cream cheese, lox, etc but don't go there looking for a cinnamon crunch topping!

Today I got to see the new special exhibit at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art - Reflecting Class in the Age of Rembrandt and Vermeer. As with everything they do there it was wonderful. I thought it was so interesting how it was designed - examining 17th-century Dutch paintings in light of the new Republic's social structure. Although the Dutch Republic was relatively democratic at the time, class distinctions remained and conveyed a variety of meanings to its citizens. I learned a lot and can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
